SUMMARY

The Internist will diagnose and provide non-surgical treatment of diseases and injuries of internal organ systems. Provide care mainly for adults who have a wide range of problems associated with the internal organs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Treat internal disorders, such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and problems of the lung, brain, kidney, and gastrointestinal tract.
  • Analyze records, reports, test results, or examination information to diagnose medical condition of patient.
  • Prescribe or administer medication, therapy, and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury
  • Provide and manage long-term, comprehensive medical care, including diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of diseases, for adult patients in an office or hospital.
  • Manage and treat common health problems, such as infections, influenza and pneumonia, as well as serious, chronic, and complex illnesses, in adolescents, adults and the elderly.
  • Monitor patients’ conditions and progress and reevaluate treatments as necessary.
  • Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examination results.
  • Make diagnoses when different illnesses occur together or in situations where the diagnosis may be obscure.
  • Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients.
  • Advise patients and community members concerning diet, activity, hygiene, and disease prevention.
  • Refer patient to medical specialist or other practitioner when necessary.
  • Immunize patients to protect them from preventable diseases.
  • Advise surgeon of patient’s risk status and recommend appropriate intervention to minimize risk.
  • Provide consulting services to the other doctors caring for patients with special or difficult problems.
  • Community based medicine, such as public health, disaster situations, infectious disease.
  • Working with elected governments, i.e. Tribal Council, Local Government, State, etc.).
  • Experience or extra training in Environmental or Occupational Medicine is a definite plus.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • May have supervising responsibilities should the Medical Director be out of the office.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • New York State License for Internal Medicine

IMPORTANT QUALITIES:

  • Communication Skills – need to be excellent communicators. Must be able to communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare support staff.
  • Compassion – physicians deal with patients who are sick or injured and may be in extreme pain or distress.Physicians must be able to treat patients and their families with compassion and understanding.
  • Physicians must ensure that patients are receiving appropriate treatment and medications.They must also monitor and record various pieces of information related to patient care.
  • Leadership skills – Physicians who work in their own practice need to be effective leaders.
  • Organizational skills – strong organizational skills, including good recordkeeping, are critical in medical settings.
  • Patience – Physicians may work for long periods with patients who need special attention.Children and adult patients who fear medical treatment may require more patience.
  • Problem-solving skills – Physicians need to evaluate patients’ symptoms and administer the appropriate treatments.They often need to do this quickly in order to save a patient’s life.
