Summary: Under the guidance and direction of the Land Resources Program Manager, the Summer Field Technician will learn about and support of the functions of the Land Resource Program though the completion of a Native Plants Cataloguing Project. The field technician will also be engaged in a cultural exchange program with peers from other Haudenosaunee and Wabanaki Tribes to demonstrate how engrained language and culture are in our understanding and management of our natural resources.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Serve as a member of the Land Resources Program of the Environment Division supporting our efforts in forestry, invasive plant identification, and the operation of the SRMT Native Plant Nursery.
- Maintain safety protocols when operating any tools, vehicles, or equipment.
- Collect environmental data or samples, while documenting details in either written or electronic form.
- Over the course of the summer, create an Akwesasne Native Plant Catalogue using provided materials (prepared, pressed plants). This will require some research into plant identification and the definition of a native plant to create a brief plant identification guide to accompany the catalogue.
- Spend some time in the field (primarily at the SRMT Native Plant Nursery) to identify other, local native plants for inclusion in the catalogue.
- Use a plant press to preserve native plant materials.
- Participate in an Akwesasne Cultural Exchange camp, while SRMT hosts visiting students from other Haudenosaunee and Wabanaki Tribes.
- Mandatory travel to the participate in the Wabanaki Earth Camp from July 13- 17, 2026.
- Travel to the end of summer capstone event to present the research project to the group of student and mentors from August 10- 12, 2026.
- Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
Supervisory Responsibilities: There are no supervisor requirements for this position.

Education and/or Experience:
- Must be enrolled in a post-secondary program for the 2026- 2027 academic year.
- Must be an enrolled member of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe or Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Fleet Policy.
