SUMMARY: The Language Teaching Assistant will be responsible for assisting the Language Specialists with teaching students in a full immersion Mohawk language teaching environment with the goal of increasing language fluency. The Language Specialists and Language Teaching Assistant will focus on establishing a strong Mohawk language foundation through daily classroom instruction that utilizes the root word method curriculum.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, but not limited to:
- Provide daily assistance to the Language Specialists.
- Assist in Curriculum Development and assessment.
- Assist in providing daily instruction to the students in the Mohawk language.
- Maintain records of the students’ progress and attendance.
- Participate in workshops or events conducted by the program.
- Promote health and safety of Á:se Tsi Tewà:ton Kanienkéha Language Program.
- Provide monthly reports.
- Work flexible hours considering the cultural activity and seasonal changes.
- Non-traditional instruction setting may extend beyond the classroom.
- Other classroom duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTIIES: There are no supervisory requirements for this position.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Due to the sensitive nature of information obtained, must maintain strict confidentiality at all times. Knowledge of the Mohawk language and traditions.
- Previous teaching experience in the Mohawk Language.
- Knowledge of written and oral Mohawk Language skills.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Minimum
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Consideration will be given to an equivalent, relevant combination of education/experience.
- Certification in Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPI) is an ASSET
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
- Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff, community members, and facilitators of the Á:se Tsi Tewà:ton Kanienkéha Language Program.
- Computer literacy preferred.
- Knowledge of ceremonies is an asset.
- First language speaker is an asset
- Familiarity with root word method curriculum.
Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean drivers abstract in accordance with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Fleet Policy.
