SUMMARY:  The Peer Support Specialist at our outpatient clinic provides compassionate, recovery-focused support to gender specific individuals facing mental health and/or substance use challenges. Using lived experience, the Peer Support Specialist fosters hope, empowerment, and connection, helping community members access resources, build resilience, and engage in wellness activities offered through the center. Due to the needs of program participants, group structures, and trauma‑informed gender‑specific services, this position requires a male Peer Support Specialist as a bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ) consistent with OASAS guidance and Tribal community cultural standards.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Offer one-on-one gender-specific peer support to individuals in the outpatient clinic, drawing on personal recovery experience. Can meet the needs of clients who require same‑gender support for individuals identifying as male for safety, privacy, or therapeutic reasons.
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate gender specific wellness workshops, and recovery-oriented activities within the center.
  • Provide advocacy and education on recovery models with an emphasis on trauma-informed, culturally sensitive care and harm reduction.
  • Participate in gender specific individual and group supervision to ensure quality service delivery and professional development.
  • Help individuals navigate community resources, including housing, employment, education, and healthcare.
  • Promote engagement in center programs and events that support mental health, sobriety, and social connection.
  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and local service providers to ensure coordinated support.
  • Provide transportation services related to recovery focus appointments.
  • Participate in ongoing training and supervision to enhance peer support skills.
  • Utilize computer software efficiently and effectively to document and track client records and data.

 

MANDATED REPORTER: Must become a mandated reporter prior to having contact with children in a job-related capacity and maintain that status throughout employment. This includes completing any necessary training and adhering to all reporting obligations as defined by applicable laws and tribal policies.

 

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS: There are no supervisory requirements.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

 

  • High School Diploma or GED and lived experience with addiction.
  • 1-year experience in a mental health/addictions field with lived addictions experience preferred

 

OTHER SKILLS and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Personal sustained experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery,
  • Certification as a Peer Support Specialist or willingness to obtain certification within six months, this will be completed by Office of Mental Health and Office of Addiction Services and Supports curriculums.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a diverse, community-based environment.
  • Ability to serve individuals who request or require same‑gender staff
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and communication.
