Summary:  As a Psychiatrist you will provide direct patient care, including diagnosis, treatment plans and dispositions and play a key role in driving improvements in primary care, quality initiatives, and patient satisfaction, while aligning with program goals and organization values. Deliver high-quality gender-affirming and culturally responsive patient care across diverse populations, including children, geriatrics, and individuals with developmental disabilities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
 

Clinical Assessment & Diagnosis

  • Conduct thorough psychiatric assessments and diagnostic evaluations for patients of all ages, including pediatrics and geriatrics.
  • Obtain detailed medical, psychiatric, and substance use histories.
  • Perform physical exams and order appropriate laboratory tests (toxicology screens, liver function tests, pregnancy tests, etc.).
  • Develop individualized treatment plans incorporating psychopharmacology, psychotherapy (including cognitive behavioral therapy and psychodynamic therapy), and other behavioral health interventions.
  • Provide outpatient psychiatric care, ensuring comprehensive management of mental health disorders such as PTSD, addiction, depression, anxiety, and developmental disabilities.
  • Medication Management including prescribing and managing FDA-approved MAT medications (e.g., buprenorphine, buprenorphine-naloxone, naltrexone) in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Initiate, stabilize, and adjust medication dosages based on clinical presentation, safety, and effectiveness.
  • Monitor medication adherence, side effects, and potential drug interactions.
  • Provide medically supervised withdrawal management when appropriate.
  • Manage patient records accurately using medical documentation standards and maintain detailed notes on patient progress and treatment outcomes.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate care plans and ensure continuity of care across settings.

Patient Education & Counseling

  • Educate patients and families about behavioral health conditions, treatment options, and medication management.
  • Provide harm-reduction counseling, including overdose prevention, safe medication storage, and naloxone distribution/use.
  • Collaborate with behavioral health clinicians, counselors, case managers, pharmacists, and community partners to ensure integrated care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case reviews and care planning.

Monitoring, Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation of encounters, treatment plans, progress notes, and medication changes.
  • Review and document Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP/iSTOP) checks and other requirements of the practice per New York State requirements.
  • Conduct routine urine drug screenings, as indicated, and interpret results within clinical context.
  • Ensure adherence to all federal and state regulations, including DEA and SAMHSA guidelines.

Crisis Management & Patient Support

  • Assess and respond to patient crises, including relapse, withdrawal complications, or psychiatric emergencies.
  • Implement safety planning and appropriate referrals for higher levels of care.
  • Provide trauma-informed, culturally sensitive care that supports long-term recovery.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position supervises the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. The position also may provide clinical supervision for licensure requirements/ clinical oversight of PNP, social workers, and mental health counselors with limited permits.

 

Mandated Reporter: Must become a mandated reporter prior to having contact with children in a job-related capacity and maintain that status throughout employment. This includes completing any necessary training and adhering to all reporting obligations as defined by applicable laws and tribal policies.
 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Due to the sensitive nature of information and files maintained within Health Services, must maintain strict confidentiality at all times. 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) must be obtained within 45 days of employment.
  • Be able to respond to crisis situations and provide immediate support to clients at risk.
  • Skilled in developing and implementing individualized treatment plans, facilitating group therapy, and providing ongoing support to clients in recovery.
  • Strong knowledge of medical records management, medical terminology, diagnostic evaluation procedures, and psychopharmacology.
  • Proficiency in psychotherapeutic techniques including cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and addiction counseling.
  • Experience with telehealth platforms for remote patient care is preferred.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) with board certification or eligibility in Psychiatry. AND
  • 2 years post-residency experience in behavioral health settings such as inpatient units or outpatient clinics.

OR

  • The above qualifications and two (2) years’ experience in pediatric psychiatry, geriatrics, or working with individuals with developmental disabilities PREFERRED.
