Summary:  Under the direction of the Water Program Manager, the Water/Wastewater Operator is responsible for general duties required to operate and maintain (inside and outside) the Water Treatment Plant, Wastewater Treatment Plant, lift stations, and collection and distribution systems. This position is responsible to sustain the vision of providing clean, safe drinking water as well as the proper collection and treatment of wastewater for the community of Akwesasne and its visitors. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: 

 

  • Perform established Operation and Maintenance procedures both inside and around the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).
  • Maintain the grounds of all water and wastewater assets, including but not limited to sewer lift stations, water towers, hydrants, sanitary manholes, customer water and waste water services etc.
  • Maintain proper water treatment and distribution system as well as wastewater treatment and collection, including all pumps and infrastructure repairs.
  • Follow proper sampling procedures to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Monitor and adjust controls of chemical processes and equipment used for water and wastewater disinfection and treatment.
  • Ensure treatment facilities are in safe, working conditions with emphasis on preventive maintenance.
  • Assist contractors, consultants and all SRMT programs with repairs to existing water and wastewater systems and installation of new systems.
  • Maintain monthly operating reports and discharge permits.
  • Available 24/7 for on-call emergency services for repairs or alerts at the WTP/WWTP or distribution systems. Must follow On -Call Policy when assigned.
  • Ability to lift heavy items within reason, work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Attend required safety courses such as CPR, Confined Space, Excavation, Working from Heights etc.
  • Obtain New York State Operator certification(s) within three years. Training is provided. Must be willing to travel. NYSDEC Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (2A), NYSDOH Water Treatment Plant Operator (2A), Distribution System Operator (D)        
  • Ability to learn Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and basic Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Maintain certifications and Continuing Education Units (CEU).
  • Must be able to listen and work with community members. Must have good people skills.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: There are no supervisor requirements for this position.

 

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Work hours are Monday to Friday with periodic weekend shifts. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

 

Education and/or Experience: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
    • Minimum 2 years work experience with similar responsibilities and duties.
  • One (1) year experience in water and wastewater treatment processes and mechanical pump functions an asset.
  • NYS 2A Operator certification in water and/or wastewater treatment an asset.
  • Confined Space training an asset

 

Other Skills and Abilities: Basic oral and written communication skills required. Familiarity with computer programs, such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, is required. Electrical and mechanical skills. 

 

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of complex variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to communicate with community members in a clear, calm and concise manner.

 

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean drivers abstract in accordance with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Fleet Policy.
