Possible Telephone Scam in Akwesasne

Jan 10, 2011

A community member recently reported that they received a phone call last week, asking for their participation in a survey. The caller wanted to know what type of prescription drugs were in their household. The community member refused to answer the questions over the phone and instead asked for a written survey. When the written survey did not arrive, the community member became more suspicious and contacted the Health Services pharmacy.

Possibly the purpose of the phone call was to determine whether or not the household had any prescription drugs of any interest to the caller, such as Oxycontin. Community members need to safeguard their prescription drugs against theft. Community members are also asked to be vigilant about answering any questions regarding the type of prescription drugs present in the home. The St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department has been notified about this phone call. Anybody having any questions, or who receive similar phone calls are asked to contact the tribal police department at 358-9200.
