Tribe Partners with County for Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Aug 2, 2011

Combating Waste and Pollution

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe has a long-standing working relationship with St. Lawrence County’s solid waste department. It began in 1998 with their input on the design of the tribe’s transfer station. Once it opened, recyclables were taken to the Massena transfer station until two years ago when the tribe switched to single stream.

As a result of this partnership, Akwesasne community members will be permitted to participate in St. Lawrence County’s Residential Household Hazardous Waste and Pharmaceutical/Controlled Substances Collection Days. This is for seasonal and year-round residents, not commercial, municipal or institutional organizations. The collection day will take place on Saturday, August 6, 2011 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Massena Transfer Station (Dump Road off State Rte. 420) Town Rd. Massena. In addition to accepting household hazardous wastes, they will also accept unused or unwanted prescriptions.

This is another example of us working together to providing quality services to the community. To find out the type of materials they will accept and will not accept, please go to: http://www.co.st-lawrence.ny.us/Departments/SolidWaste/HHW.

For any questions, interested individuals can call the St. Lawrence County Planning Office 315-379-2292.
