Chief Cook and Sub-Chief Jacobs Seated

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe has announced the certification of Tribal Chief and Sub-Chief on Monday, August 5, 2013 and in a wonderful turn of events, were sworn in the same day. Both Beverly Cook and Shelley Jacobs agreed to their oath of office and have taken their seat on Tribal Council starting immediately.

Chief Justice Peter J. Herne performed the swearing in ceremony and Tribal Clerk Corleen Jacco administered the certificates for each to sign.

Newly elected Tribal Chief Beverly Cook exhibited excitement as well as humility in joining the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council. “I am honored to work for the community of Akwesasne and look forward to working with the existing Council,” states Ms. Cook.

“Working with the community at Indian Health Services, I saw the need to foster a strong relationship with the elders and the youth of Akwesasne. Nothing will change as those family bonds can only improve our community,” concludes Ms. Cook.

Incumbent Shelley Jacobs is now serving her second term in office. Ms. Jacobs noted, “I am eager to begin my second term. Chief Beverly Cook’s experience in the healthcare field will be an asset as well as a new perspective for Council. I look forward to working with her, Tribal Council and the staff of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe.”

The Inauguration Ceremony has been tentatively set for Friday, August 16, 2013 at the IGA parking lot across from the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino beginning at 11:00 a.m. This event will be an open celebration to commemorate the swearing in of Chief Beverly Cook and Sub-Chief Shelley Jacobs, Traffic Court Judges Lois Terrance, Steve Cook and Chief Judge Peter J. Herne.
