Apr 30, 2014

SRMT Education Division and JOM Take 17 Students to DC

On Thursday April 24, 2014, seventeen students and five chaperones left for Washington, DC to attend the USA Science and Engineering Festival, held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The students were members of our local AISES (American Indian Science and Engineering Society) Chapter that is run by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Johnson O’Malley Program.

Students were able to choose from over 3000 hands-on activities and over 150 stage shows, including music, magic and comedy. Students attended a “Career and College Fair” and a book fair with 25 featured authors.

Highlights of the visit to DC included visiting the National Zoo, the National Mall and the historic Keystone Pipeline Protest.

Executive Director of Education, Stephanie Cook, stated, “It was an exhilarating experience for the students, with a lot of information packed into one day. It is our hope to return next year and take more time to explore the sites. It was an uplifting, exciting and motivational experience for all who attended!”

If you have a child that is entering the 7th grade in the fall and they have a desire to grow in the Science/Technology/Engineering/Math fields, then this is an opportunity you don’t want to miss. Our local AISES meets monthly and students in grades 7-12 get the opportunity to explore the STEM fields through hands-on activities and opportunities.
