Akwesasne Residents Being Notified of Phone Scam

AKWESASNE — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is notifying Akwesasne residents of a phone scam involving Health Service's main phone number of (518) 358-3141. A community member contacted Health Services today after receiving the call to say after you answer the phone, an automated recording on the other end introduces themselves from Health Services and asks the individual to provide personal information, including their social security number. Health Services does not have an automated phone system. This is a phone scam and individuals should immediately hang-up without offering a response.

Individuals are being reminded that phone scams are designed to encourage the person being called to offer personal information or an acknowledgement to questions, such as "Yes or "Sure", to bill a product or service in your name. When you deny the charge, the scammer will playback your verbal confirmation and threaten to take legal action if you don't pay.

If you think you've been the victim of a phone scam, please contact your local police department and provide the following information: telephone number called; date and time of call; and any information appearing on Caller ID, including the telephone number from.
