Monsanto Inspections Being Conducted on April 27th & 28th

Apr 26, 2021

AKWESASNE — As part of the ongoing legal complaint that the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe filed against Monsanto in November 2018 for exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (“PCBs”), notice is being provided that the defendant will be conducting property inspections in the Akwesasne community on Tuesday, April 27th and Wednesday, April 28th.

The purpose of inspecting tribal properties and those belonging to individual tribal members is due to the Rules of Discovery, which allows Monsanto’s defense team to visually inspect the damages. Individuals property owners have the right to grant consent to the inspections.

The April 27th inspection will be conducted on land, while the April 28th inspection will be on the water. It will entail approximately 12 individuals driving around the Akwesasne community to photograph, take GPS coordinates, and walk around certain properties.

A member of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Environment Division will be accompanying the inspection. The Tribe’s Legal Department will be on call at (518) 358-2272, as well as our outside counsel litigating this case on behalf of the Tribe and individual tribal members.

The Monsanto team is aware of the Tribe’s COVID-19 restrictions and will only be entitled to access public spaces wearing masks and maintaining social distance.

The Tribe is asking community members to please be respectful of this judicial process.

For any questions, please contact SRMT General Counsel Dale White at (518) 358-2272 or SRMT Environment Division Director Tony David at (518) 358-5937.
