With the recent success of a gun buy-back on January 23, 2013, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department is scheduling another one for February 12, 2013. “The tribe provided 100 percent of the funding for the earlier buy-back, which was very successful,” said Tribal Chief Ron LaFrance. “So we thought it would be a good idea to fund another one.”
The earlier gun buy-back netted 41 weapons. Community members may turn in firearms, with no questions asked, to the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department station number 1, located on State Route 37, Akwesasne. They will receive $200 for assault rifles or pistols, $100 for working shotguns or rifles for and $25 to $50 for bb guns or non-working shotguns. All payments will be in cash. Individuals must transport the weapons in a legal manner and bring it into the station in some type of case. “Even if we only get one gun off the streets, it’s worth it,” remarked Tribal Chief Randy Hart.
Tribal police have scheduled the next gun buy-back for Tuesday February 12, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Individuals with questions may call the tribal police department at 518-358-9200.
