SUMMARY

The Assistant Executive Director (AED) serves as a key member of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's executive leadership team, reporting directly to the Executive Director, helping to guide the strategic direction, operational excellence, and long-term success of Tribal government. This highly influential role works in partnership with the Executive Director, Tribal Council, Division Directors, and community stakeholders to advance the Tribe's mission, strengthen organizational performance, and enhance services for tribal members.
 

The AED provides leadership and oversight of assigned departments, drives strategic initiatives, supports organizational growth, and ensures programs and services effectively respond to community priorities. Serving as a trusted advisor and acting Executive Director when delegated, this position plays a critical role in advancing Tribal sovereignty, fostering cultural preservation, and strengthening organizational effectiveness, and supporting the long-term success of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: 

  • Partner with the Executive Director to provide strategic leadership, direction, and oversight of the day-to-day operations of Tribal government departments, programs, and services.
  • Lead and support the implementation of Tribal Council policies, resolutions, strategic initiatives, organizational objectives, and Executive Director directives, ensuring alignment with the Tribe's mission, vision, and priorities.
  • Serve as Acting Executive Director when designated, exercising delegated authority and ensuring continuity of leadership, decision-making, and organizational operations.
  • Direct, monitor, and evaluate departmental performance, operational effectiveness, program outcomes, and service delivery to ensure Tribal goals and community needs are met.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, guidance, and accountability to department directors, managers, and supervisors while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, professionalism, and high performance.
  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic plans, annual work plans, performance measures, and organizational priorities that advance Tribal initiatives.
  • Ensure organizational compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local laws, regulations, grant requirements, contractual obligations, and internal policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation, administration, and oversight of annual operating and capital budgets while promoting fiscal responsibility, transparency, accountability, and sound stewardship of Tribal assets and resources.
  • Collaborate with finance staff, program leadership, and departmental management to maximize organizational effectiveness and ensure efficient allocation and utilization of resources.
  • Analyze operational, programmatic, financial, and performance data to support informed decision-making, strategic planning, risk management, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify funding opportunities and support the development, negotiation, and administration of grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, and intergovernmental partnerships that advance Tribal priorities.
  • Build, strengthen, and maintain effective working relationships with Tribal Council members, community members, employees, government agencies, funding organizations, partner entities, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent the Tribe at meetings, conferences, negotiations, public forums, intergovernmental gatherings, and community events as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of organizational policies, procedures, administrative systems, and operational best practices.
  • Support workforce development, leadership development, succession planning, employee engagement, training initiatives, and organizational capacity-building efforts.
  • Provide leadership and guidance in addressing complex organizational, personnel, operational, regulatory, and community issues while maintaining professionalism, sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Promote transparent and effective communication throughout the organization and ensure the timely dissemination of information to support collaboration and organizational success.
  • Support emergency preparedness, continuity of operations planning, public health response activities, and crisis management efforts to ensure organizational resilience and continuity of essential services.
  • Champion Tribal sovereignty, cultural preservation, community values, and the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe in all aspects of leadership, administration, and decision-making. 
  • Perform other related executive-level duties, special projects, and strategic initiatives as assigned by the Executive Director in support of Tribal Council priorities and organizational objectives.

     

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assistant Executive Director shall carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable Tribal rules. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to interviewing, hiring, training employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining assigned Division Directors and approving their timecards and time off requests.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) from a four-year college or university; AND
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible management experience, including a minimum of three (3) years in a senior leadership or executive management role.

  • Exceptional written, verbal, and public communication skills Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English and must be able to respond to visual and oral cues.
  • Must possess strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage staff, leadership, community members, and external partners.
  • Must demonstrate strong executive leadership skills, including strategic planning, decision-making, team development, and the ability to lead organizational initiatives and achieve strategic objectives.
  • Knowledge of Mohawk language, culture and community dynamics will be considered an asset.
  • Understanding of tribal governance, tribal sovereignty, and government administration.
  • Experience of federal grant administration and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with Federal OMB and other pertinent federal legislation impacting Tribal Governments is preferred.
