SUMMARY: Under the direction and supervision of the Program Manager, the Peer Counselor will develop supportive relationships with women to improve the likelihood that expectant mothers will decide to nurse infants and use peer counselors’ expertise after their infant’s birth.
Mandated Reporter: Must become a mandated reporter and maintain that status throughout employment. This includes completing any necessary training and adhering to all reporting obligations as defined by applicable laws and tribal policies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding. She also helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
- Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, home visits, and/or hospital visits at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC Program.
- Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC mothers.
- Attend breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor.
- Receives a caseload of WIC mothers and makes routine periodic contact with all mothers assigned.
- Attends and assists with prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups.
- May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: There are no supervisor requirements for this position.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Paraprofessionals who are recruited and hired from the target population and available to WIC families outside usual clinic hours and outside the WIC clinic environments. Must be available for evenings and weekends.
- Enthusiastic about breastfeeding and want to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience.
- Experience with and/or knowledge of Native American Cultures is an asset.
- Excellent computer skills
- Ability to interact effectively with all groups
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Has breastfed at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding)
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
