Summary:
Under the direction of the KLP Program Manager, the Language Specialist is responsible for providing Mohawk language instruction within a full-immersion learning environment. The position focuses on developing Mohawk language speakers by delivering linguistically and culturally relevant instruction, assessing language proficiency, developing curriculum and instructional materials, and supporting language revitalization efforts throughout the Akwesasne community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Provide daily instruction to the students in the Mohawk language. Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with program objectives.
- Provide evaluations and maintain records of the students’ progress.
- Develop curriculum for implementing the language and activities as well as participate in curriculum reviews.
- Produce educational materials including books, digital media, audio recordings, videos and other resources that promote and support Mohawk Language revitalization in Akwesasne.
- Participate in workshops or events conducted by the KLP and collaborate with language instructors, Elders, first and second language speakers and cultural knowledge holders.
- Promote health and safety of students and all others involved.
- Submit monthly reports to supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibilities: There are no supervisor requirements for this position.

Due to the sensitive nature of information obtained, must maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
Previous teaching experience in a Mohawk Language immersion environment with a minimum of six months to one-year teaching experience required with significant knowledge of Mohawk grammar, linguistics, and instructional techniques and be able to work effectively and cooperatively with staff and students. Candidate must also be fluent in the Mohawk language with advanced or higher levels of proficiency in written and verbal abilities.
Education and/or Experience:
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Consideration will be given to an equivalent, relevant combination of education/experience.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Certification in Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPI) is an asset.
- Ability to utilize teaching methods focused on morphology is an asset.
- Ability to adapt to a fast-paced changing environment and handle multiple priorities.
- Computer literacy preferred.
- Knowledge of culture is an asset.
Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Fleet Policy.
