Aug 10, 2016

Comments from Tribal Members Being Accepted Until September 5th

Akwesasne, NY — At the Monthly Tribal meeting held on Seskéha/August 6, 2016; the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council introduced two draft questions that will be posed to the membership through a tribal referendum. The introduction of the draft questions pertain to the proposed exploration of medical marijuana and industrial hemp; which was postponed from the June 4th tribal election.

In accordance with the Tribal Procedures Act adopted by tribal voters in a referendum held on Ohiarí:ha/June 1, 2013, the Tribal Chiefs agreed to present the two draft referendum questions to the membership for comment. As a result, Tribal Council introduced the two draft questions at the August Tribal Meeting to seek input from its Tribal members.

Tribal members have a 30-day period ending Seskehkó:wa/September 5, 2016, to submit written comments to the Office of the Tribal Clerk on the following draft questions:

Draft Question #1: “Should the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe explore options to legalize, license and regulate the cultivation, production and distribution of MEDICAL MARIJUANA?”

Draft Question #2: “Should the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe explore options to legalize, license and regulate the cultivation, production and distribution of INDUSTRIAL HEMP?”

Following the finalization of the two referendum questions, public meetings will be scheduled to discuss each referendum question. Three public meetings will be held for each question. The dates, times and locations will be provided after September 5th, once the resolution on the referendum questions is finalized.
