Akwesasne Burn Ban in Effect March 16 to May 14

AKWESASNE – (Enniskó:wa/March 9, 2026) The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) are providing a reminder to the Akwesasne community of the annual Spring burn ban in effect from March 16 to May 14.

The month-long ban specifically prohibits what the New York State Department of Conservation calls “open burning,” which includes brush, tree limbs, lawn trimmings/grass, and building materials. An open burning could potentially start an uncontrolled wildfire, which can destroy personal property, place an individual’s safety at risk, and require an emergency response from the HAVFD, limiting their capacity to respond to other emergency calls.

Recreational fires are allowed during this community-wide burn ban so long as they abide by the following provisions: fires that burn charcoal, dry, clean or untreated wood. Recreational fires include ceremonial bonfires, small cooking fires, and fires that are less than three feet tall and four feet in diameter.

Please be respectful of this burn ban and recognize that it is intended to keep our community safe. The burn ban will be enforced and violators may be subject to fines.
