Akwesasne Youth Invited to Represent Community at World Suicide Prevention Conference in New Zealand

Akwesasne — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne are thrilled to announce an incredible opportunity for Akwesasronon youth to participate in a Cultural Exchange and World Suicide Prevention Conference in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton), New Zealand, taking place September 14–23, 2026.


This initiative, called ratinenhri:ne’s — “They Lead the Group”, will bring together Indigenous youth to share their cultures, stories, and strategies for wellness and suicide prevention. The trip will include attendance at the World Indigenous Suicide Prevention (WISP) Conference, scheduled for September 17–19, 2026.


Akwesasne delegation will have the opportunity to build meaningful global connections, exchange cultural knowledge, and strengthen their leadership skills as young ambassadors for the community.


This initiative is made possible through a strong partnership between the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, and Akwesasne Child and Family Services (ACFS), who are proud to support and encourage youth participation in this international experience promoting cultural pride, healing, and hope.


Requirements for interested participants:
 

  • Must be a registered member of Akwesasne
  • Must be between the ages of 15–24 years old at the time of travel
  • Must submit a video application or essay
