AKWESASNE – (Kenténha/October 31, 2025) The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, and the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department (HAVFD) are pleased to announce that the community-wide burn ban is officially lifted, effective immediately.
The decision to rescind the ban follows recent rainfall which has reduced the risk of uncontrolled wildfires.
With the lifting of the ban, residents are now permitted to conduct open burning activities, including brush fires, fires in burning barrels, and bonfires. We ask that all community members exercise extreme caution and follow these safety guidelines:
- Never leave an open fire unattended.
- Keep a water source, such as a hose or a bucket of water, or a fire extinguisher nearby at all times.
- Ensure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the area.
- Do not burn on windy days.
Small campfires in contained fire pits, such as those made of metal or stone, remain an acceptable and safe way to enjoy a fire, provided you use caution and responsibly handle potential ignition sources, including the proper disposal of cigarettes.
We extend our sincere thanks to all community members for their cooperation and vigilance in adhering to the burn ban. Your efforts have been critical in helping to protect our lands, resources, and each other. We ask that you continue to prioritize safety and act responsibly to keep our community safe.
