Burn Ban Lifted in Akwesasne

AKWESASNE – The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA), Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT), and Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department (HAVFD) are informing the community that the Akwesasne burn ban is officially lifted, effective September 3, 2025.

The decision to lift the burn ban follows recent rainfall, which has reduced the risk of uncontrolled wildfires.

With the lifting of the ban, residents are now permitted to conduct open burning activities, including brush fires, fires in burning barrels, and bonfires.

All community members are asked to exercise extreme caution and follow these safety guidelines:

• Never leave an open fire unattended.

• Keep a water source, such as a hose or bucket of water, or a fire extinguisher nearby at all

times.

• Ensure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the area.

• Do not burn on windy days.

Small campfires in contained fire pits, such as those made of metal or stone, remain an acceptable and safe way to enjoy a fire. Always use caution and responsibly handle potential ignition sources, including properly disposing of cigarettes.

Niawenhko:wa to all community members for their cooperation and vigilance during the burn ban. Your efforts have been critical in protecting our lands, resources, and each other. Please continue to prioritize safety and act responsibly to keep our community safe.
