Home Heating & Safety

  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to allow warm air to reach plumbing
  • Wrap pipes, drain them, or allow faucets to drip slowly to prevent freezing
  • Keep your heat set to 55°F or higher when away
  • Use space heaters safely—keep flammable items at least 3 feet away
  • Never use an oven or grill to heat your home
  • Check on elders, infants, and those with access or functional needs
  • Ensure windows and doors are sealed and you have enough heating fuel

Generator Safety

  • Never operate generators in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces
  • Keep generators dry—do not run in rain or wet conditions
  • Place generators at least 20 feet from your home
  • Do not plug generators directly into your home
  • Maintain 3–4 feet of clearance around the generator
  • Use grounded cords rated for proper wattage and inspect for damage
  • Always direct exhaust away from your home
  • Improper use can cause carbon monoxide poisoning

Additional Safety Tips

  • Keep pets indoors as much as possible
  • Make frequent checks on older family members, friends, and neighbors
  • Stay indoors if you can. If you must go outside, dress in layers
  • Cover all exposed skin—gloves, hats, and scarves help prevent heat loss
