The Office of Emergency Management and Safety (OEMS) is continuing to closely monitor the St. Regis River for potential ice jam activity.
Current River Status
- Ice Movement: Field observations confirm that some of the river ice has moved and is now in an active transport phase.
- Potential Risks: With moving ice, there is an inherent and increased risk for ice jams to form, which can lead to rapid and unpredictable water level increases.
- Downstream Conditions: Intact ice cover downstream can act as a barrier, potentially causing ice fragments to stack and create a backwater effect.
Community Guidance
- Stay Informed: We encourage all community members to stay vigilant and watch for official updates through Tribal channels.
- Emergency Preparedness: Please ensure your family has an emergency plan in place. This includes knowing your evacuation routes and being prepared to relocate if necessary should water levels rise suddenly.
- Safety First: Avoid areas prone to flooding, especially near riverbanks, and follow instructions from first responders.
OEMS will continue to provide real-time updates as the situation evolves.
