Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Announces Final Draft of Non-member Fishing Amendment Laws

AKWESASNE -- The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) is continuing to take steps that safeguard the inherent and protected right of Akwesashró:non to fish in Akwesasne’s territorial waters.

In 2014, the Non-Member Fishing Regulations and Law (TCR 2011-52) was amended in collaboration with tribal fisherman to strengthen the protection of Akwesasne’s natural resources. At the request of local residents, the SRMT Compliance Department has proposed additional amendments to further enhance the protected right of community members to fish in Akwesasne’s waters.

Three public consultations and information sessions on proposed amendment(s), were scheduled for tribal members to join either virtually or in-person. The consultation meetings where held on Tsiothohrkó:wa/January 18th, Tsiothohrkó:wa/January 25th, and Onerahtokha/ April 26th.

Following the first two (2) consultation meetings in January, members were given an opportunity to submit written comments or concerns that were considered and the draft document presented Onerahtokha/ April 26th reflects many of those comments.

The proposed fishing regulations are now available to view on the Tribal Members Portal and they are also available from the Tribal Clerk’s Office by calling (518) 358-2272, or you may also visit the Tribal Clerk’s office located at Ionkwakiohkwaróron Tribal Administration Building. This notice commences the final public review period and shall expire on June 2, 2023, whereupon a Tribal Council Resolution to adopt the Final Draft Amendment will be presented to Tribal Council for approval.
