Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Issues Notice on Hunting on Tribal Properties

Notice on Hunting on Tribal Properties

AKWESASNE – (Kenténha/October 8, 2025) The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is providing notification to individuals and community members of the requirement to obtain written permission prior to hunting, trapping, and harvesting wildlife on Tribal properties, which include Tribal conservation areas.

Tribal Council Resolution to Increase Tribal Forest Conservation Area Size to Accommodate the Expansion of Kahrhaka:ion Nature Trail (TCR 2025-17) outlines the 57 acres of conservation land located within the SRMT jurisdiction and provisions on recreational use. TCR 2025-17 states, “No hunting or discharge of any firearm (pistol, muzzle loader, shotgun, and rifle) or bow hunting shall be allowed within the Conservation Area, nor shall be allowed within 500 feet of any dwellings adjacent to the Conservation Area.”

Requests to partake in any of the above activities, including the sustainable harvesting of medicinal plants in conservation areas, shall be made to the Parks & Recreation Program Manager or the Executive Director's Office.

“The purpose of the notification is to remind Tribal members the importance of safety within shared spaces for outdoor enthusiasts who may unknowingly be in the vicinity of others during the upcoming hunting season,” stated Director of Compliance Elliott Lazore.

The Tribe urges community members to wear high-visibility clothing and stay alert while enjoying the outdoors during the upcoming hunting season.
