Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe to Host Public Meeting on Route 37 Safety Improvements
Akwesasne, NY — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe will host a public meeting on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to present details and gather feedback on the Route 37 Safety Improvements Project. The meeting will be held at the new Teionkwarihwaienawà:kon Community Services Building, located at 850 NY-37, Akwesasne.
Route 37 is currently the most crash-prone corridor in the region, with rear-end collisions being the most frequent type of injury-related crash. To address these safety concerns, the project will reconfigure approximately 4.2 miles of roadway to include a two-way left-turn lane. This proven design strategy is intended to reduce crashes involving turning vehicles and enhance overall traffic safety.
The project is being supported by a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets for All Program. This investment is part of the Tribe’s ongoing commitment to improving roadway safety for all users, including motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
During the meeting, attendees will hear a formal presentation and have the opportunity to speak directly with project engineers and consultants. The event is open to all community members, local leaders, and stakeholders interested in learning more and contributing to the planning process.
Over the past five years, more than 800 crashes have occurred on the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s roadway network and its connecting roads, with 21 involving a fatality or serious injury. The Route 37 Safety Improvements Project is a critical step toward reducing these incidents and advancing the Tribe’s vision of safer transportation infrastructure.
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe encourages all interested individuals to attend and take part in shaping the future of transportation safety in Akwesasne.
