AKWESASNE – (Ohiaríhko:wa/July 18, 2025) On Ohiaríhko:wa/July 16, 2025, at approximately 10:00 a.m. a youth group conducting roadside clean up on Drum Street in Akwesasne discovered seven abandoned neonatal canines along the roadside in high grassed ditched area. The youth group notified the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) Animal Control Program, who responded to the call immediately. Upon assessing the age and condition of the canines, they were subsequently transferred to the care of the SPCA of Northern New York, located in Jefferson County, Watertown, NY. The SRMT Compliance Program expresses gratitude to the SPCA of NNY and other local resources that assist in the housing, care, and adoption services for rescued animals.
Section 3 of the Amended Animal Control Ordinance, enacted by Tribal Council Resolution 2023-51, states “A person shall not abandon, instigate, torture, injure, kill, or poison an animal whether it belongs to him or another; or, inflict any act of cruelty on any animal with the exception of Section 4 of this ordinance.”
The SRMT Police Department (PD) encourages the community to report instances of animal abuse. The inhumane treatment of animals is illegal and is subject to criminal charges, including arrest. Tribal PD will work alongside the SRMT Animal Control Program to apply the appropriate criminal charge, and arrest, if it is determined that animal abuse has occurred and the lawful action is warranted.
