Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council Update on Meeting with Mohawk Council of Akwesasne leadership and New York Assemblyman Scott Gray.

On March 20, 2026, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, joined by the Tribe’s leadership from the Executive Director’s Office and its Environment Division met with New York Assemblyman Scott Gray, and Community Liaison Brian Murray to discuss New York State's plans to advance nuclear power technology across the State.

Tribal Chief Conners shared, "We are one community and we work together. We understand the demand of power and the need for improved infrastructure; we just don't agree that these developments happening in our backyard. There has been so much pollution introduced to our community that we are still dealing with today."

Assemblyman Gray's visit to Akwesasne created opportunity for education and open discussion, highlighting the need for education and community consultation. Assemblyman Gray voiced that Akwesasne's position remains at the forefront of any major energy developments occurring around the Akwesasne Territory.

"Thank you for having me and for coming together today. It is important that I came so that I can understand and address your concerns, so that I may represent your views in Albany. Through our open dialog, I will ensure that Akwesasne has a voice at the table. It's all about open conversations, respect and representation," remarked Assemblyman Gray, who is the Ranking Member on the State Energy Committee.

The Tribe requested information regarding environmental impact statements once the site is selected, given the Tribe's stringent regulatory practices and if the final site will impact the community of Akwesasne.

As the siting for a nuclear power project is narrowed down, the Council may work with the State for it to host an educational session on advanced nuclear power for the community of Akwesasne, dependent on the final locations selected. In continuing its government-to-government consultation regarding advanced nuclear project siting by New York State, the Tribal Council is planning a forthcoming meeting with the New York Power Authority to continue its ongoing discussions.
