To help report on this initiative, we are proud to share the following summer student spotlight, which reports on internships in areas specific to the student’s chosen career path.)

AKWESASNE – Sophie Lauzon (she/her), age 19, attends Syracuse University’s Falk College as a public health major on the pre-med track. She aspires to give back to the community and help Indigenous people as best she can during her career.

When asked to talk more about herself, she says the thing she loves doing the most is listening to music. She likes spending time with family and friends, as well as her three dogs: Rosie, Callie and Buddy.

Sophie also dabbles with baking, with her specialty being snickerdoodle cookies. She enjoys playing hockey, and in her free time, likes to watch sports such as hockey, soccer, softball and lacrosse.

Sophie is interning at SRMT’s Health Services and has spent each week working a variety of positions. While job shadowing, she has helped with scheduling and faxing, as well as seeing patients and learning how to take vitals. She has also worked at the Path of Pages Literacy Walk, created various informational pamphlets, worked on projects for Wellness Week and made a presentation on sun exposure and how to prevent skin cancer.
