AKWESASNE — The SRMT Water Resources Program is notifying the community that the General Swim Advisory issued on July 9th has been extended until at least Monday, July 19th for the St. Regis River and the Raquette River under the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s jurisdiction. Following yesterday's rainstorms, there is an increased presence of bacterial cultures in both rivers, which are above safe concentrations for primary contact. With bacteria levels above the standard, there is concern for illnesses due to accidental ingestion of untreated river water. As a result, it is the recommendation of Water Resources Program to continue the current swimming advisory on the St. Regis River and to expand this advisory to the Raquette River. Should we receive other information to the contrary prior to Monday we will issue an update as appropriate. Otherwise, The Water Resources Program plans to resample these areas on Monday and will move forward from there. Please share this information and stay safe out there!
