AKWESASNE — (Seskéh:kowa/September 12, 2025) In celebration of National Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Recognition Week, observed from September 7–13, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe proudly honors the dedication, compassion, and hard work of Direct Support Professionals who provide vital care and support to individuals with disabilities in the Akwesasne community.
To express appreciation for their tireless efforts, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council presented DSPs with special gift bags filled with gift cards and locally sourced items—supporting both frontline workers and local businesses.
“Direct Support Professionals are the heart of care—bringing dignity, respect, and joy into the lives of those they support,” said Sandy Rourke, Director of Community and Family Support. “Their compassion and commitment make an immeasurable difference every day.”
Direct Support Professionals play a crucial role in delivering services through the Community and Family Services (CFS) Program, which empowers individuals with developmental disabilities by promoting independence, encouraging personal growth, and enhancing educational experiences. Through one-on-one guidance and support, DSPs help clients achieve their personal goals and live fuller, more inclusive lives.
In addition, the Home and Community-Based Waiver Services program offers group daytime habilitation and at-home residential habilitation through the Individualized Residential Alternatives (IRA) facilities, the HCBS Waiver, and Sweetflag Estate.
Direct Support Professionals assist clients in engaging with their communities through everyday activities, attending special events, or getting to and from medical appointments. They also provide vital advocacy, mentoring, supervision, and emotional support that significantly enhances quality of life for the people they serve.
In a joint statement, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council shared:
“As frontline workers, DSPs provide vital services to our disabled community members through caregiving and other integral supports that go above and beyond. DSPs work around the clock and make sacrifices every day to ensure the quality care of our elders, youth, and families.”
On behalf of the entire Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, we extend our deepest gratitude, respect, and recognition to our community’s Direct Support Professionals. Your hard work, dedication, and compassion do not go unnoticed—this week and every week.
