AKWESASNE – After receiving several phone calls, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) is notifying tribal members of a recent phone scam concerning the SRMT Elders Benefit Fund. Various community members have called the SRMT Compliance office that they are receiving upsetting phone calls from outside the Akwesasne community stating that the Elders Benefit Fund is ending.
Tribal Council as well as the Compliance team want to re-assure tribal members who qualify for the Elders Benefit Fund that the program will not be ending. “It is extremely disheartening to learn that there are scammers out there that are targeting one of our most vulnerable groups – our elders,” stated Tribal Council.
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is reminding all community members to be cautious of phone and internet scams. Please do not give out personal information such as date of birth, Social Security numbers, bank information. SRMT, banks, Medicare, Medicaid or the Social Security Office will never ask you for this information over the phone.
Tribal members who wish to express their concerns or questions may contact SRMT Compliance at (518) 358-2273.
