AKWESASNE — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is continuing to report no new cases and no active cases of COVID-19 in the southern portion of Akwesasne. Three (3) family members and friends however, remain in quarantine and self-monitoring their symptoms. We wish them the best and appreciation for remaining at home to prevent the possibility of community spread.
This past week, Health Service’s Walk-in Vaccine Clinics have been opened to all individuals 12-years old or more to receive the COVID-19 Vaccine. We appreciate the interest among our youth to get the Pfizer Vaccine to protect themselves, their families, their friends, and the overall community. We urge all individuals who are eligible to please get vaccinated when they have the opportunity.
Today, the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) stressed the importance for youth ages 12 to 17 years to get vaccinated due to the recent increase in hospitalizations. CDC notes that one-third of adolescents who were hospitalized required admission to intensive care units. It can be attributed to several factors, including more transmissible and potentially more dangerous virus variants, larger numbers of youths returning to school, changes in social distancing, and easing of mask wearing and other safety measures.
We have been fortunate to report low case numbers during the past few weeks, but the potential remains high for an unexpected increase. It is for this and other reasons that we must remain vigilant and follow all protective measures that remain in place, which includes getting vaccinated and continued mask wearing in all public places under the Tribe’s jurisdiction — regardless of vaccination status.
Please get your COVID-19 vaccination at the Open Walk-In Clinic being held every Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the former-IGA Building located at 850 State Route 37 in Akwesasne. All individuals ages 12 years or older can attend, but please keep in mind that minors require a parent to be present. If you have questions about vaccination clinics being conducted by SRMT Health Services please call (518) 333-0230.
Individuals who are 18 years and older and receive the Moderna Vaccine will be entered into a drawing to win prizes: including a 70” Flat Screen TV, $250 BJ’s Gift Card, or a 1-Night Stay in Lake Placid with Zipline tickets! Those who receive the COVID-19 vaccine will also get a voucher for a FREE Sub, courtesy of Subway located in the Speedway Plaza at 935 State Route 37.
