Free Community Tilling in the Spring – Typically, the Agriculture Program team takes sign-ups beginning in April and begins tilling in mid-May, but this is weather-dependent. Each year, the Program requests that participants ensure their gardens are clearly marked, easily accessible, and free from debris. Announcements will be made in April each year, and sign-ups will be taken.
Free Community Garden – The program currently has a small community garden space that began as a pilot project in 2024 with 10 participants. In 2025, 10 participants will utilize this garden space. In 2026, sign-ups for a garden box at the farm may take place. We are currently not taking sign-ups for participants as we have reached capacity for our community garden space.
Ditching Program – The Agriculture Program operates the Ditching Program that works to clear agricultural ditches throughout Akwesasne. This work is conducted to ensure that agricultural lands drain properly. Ditching does not take place from April to July due to the spawning period for fish.
Composting – Once a week, the Agriculture Program collects food waste from the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and Resort for our composting efforts. Straw bedding, woodchips, and chicken manure are all added and composted to be used in our fields.
- We are currently not accepting any compost materials.
Workshops - Once a month, the Agriculture Program will host educational seminars focusing on sustainable agriculture, coordinating with other tribal programs and organizations. Upcoming workshops will be announced on the SRMT Programs and Services Facebook page, CKON Radio, and through the SRMT Staff Announcements.
- If you are interested in co-hosting a workshop with the Agriculture Program, please contact Emma Phillips, Program Manager, by phone at (518) 358-5937, ext. 5070.
