SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Head Cook, the Assistant Cook is responsible for preparation of meals for Senior Nutrition Program according to food and safety standards. Working in a fast-paced institutional kitchen environment and preparing 100 meals per day for the elders of Akwesasne. Under the general direction of the Head Cook, the Assistant Cook is responsible for performing a variety of food preparation duties such as preparing and cooking side dishes, assisting with cleaning and sanitation of kitchen and equipment, and assuming Head Cook duties when necessary. Must be friendly, outgoing, and a team player. Must be caring, courteous and be sensitive to the special needs of the elderly.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

· Assume Head Cook duties in absence of Head Cook.

· Assist in the planning of the monthly menus for congregate, home delivered, and supper bags in collaboration with the Registered Dietitian and program staff

· Assist in preparation and cooking of congregate and home delivered meals

· Notifying the Head Cook of food and supplies required by ordering deadline for deliveries and arranging for purchases at local stores, as necessary.

· Ensure Food Safety by taking and recording temperatures of meal items

· Prepare baked goods such as cake, biscuits, cobbler, and cookies as needed.

· Assist in assembly and packaging of home delivered meals and supper bags for distribution

· Ensuring rotation of supplies in dry storage with the assistance of kitchen aide.

· Ensure efficient kitchen operations in absence of Head Cook.

· Maintain cleaning schedule for kitchen and supply areas.

· Maintain a favorable working relationship with other kitchen employees to foster and promote a fun harmonious working environment.

· Attend all required trainings and meetings.

· Perform other job duties as required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

- Food Service Handling certificate (ServSafe or equivalent) and one (1) year of experience in food service Or

- High School Diploma and at least two years of work experience in food service in an institutional setting.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Job requires standing, and walking for long periods, and must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Knowledge of food safety and sanitation a must. Understanding of basic nutrition and healthy diets an asset. Mohawk language an asset and use encouraged with our clients. May be exposed to Food Allergens.

REASONING ABILITY: Must have basic math skills, good communication skills, and interpersonal skills. Time management skills a must.

Possession of a valid Driver License in accordance with Fleet Policy
