Two Men Arrested for Possession of Marijuana On U.S. Portion of River

Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Marine Unit Rescued Men from the Water

On November 27, 2013, The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Marine Unit was patrolling the St Lawrence River when a suspicious vessel was observed coming from Cornwall Island toward the US portion of Akwesasne. The Marine unit observed the boat travel towards the US portion of the St Regis River where they found the boat stranded on the frozen river. Upon approach, the two occupants were observed jumping out of their boat onto the thin layer of ice and going through, into the icy river. Tribal Police Marine unit officers rescued the two individuals from the water. Shortly thereafter, police recovered the vacated vessel. The Tribal Police K9 was utilized in searching the vessel and discovered a large black bag containing 28.4 pounds of Marijuana inside. Jess C. Thompson, 31, of Cornwall Island, ON, and Mark D. George, 21, of Snye PQ, were arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of Marijuana First Degree. Mr. Thompson and Mr. George were arraigned at Fort Covington Town Court and were remanded to Franklin County Jail on $50,000.00 cash bail each. Both men were seen by the Mohawk Council Ambulance at the riverbank and released.
